Welcome

Welcome to Yad Moss, one of Northern England’s real-snow ski and snowboard areas

Yad Moss is in the beautiful North Pennines National Landscape,  11 kilometres south of Alston. When conditions are good we enjoy over 4kms of varied intermediate skiing and plenty of ‘characterful’ off-piste.

A SNOWSPORTS CLUB
We are a Community Amateur Sports Club run by unpaid volunteers. We are open to all skiers, snowboarders and Telemarkers and also have Associate Memberships available to non-skiing adults or those currently unable to ski or board at Yad Moss. Please see our membership page for more information.

Every penny we take is ploughed back in to improve the facilities for recreational snowsports.  Over the last 40 years we have been able to provide accessible lift served skiing in this part of the high Pennines.

THE SNOW
Being England, the snow at Yad Moss is unpredictable and the amount of skiing we get varies every year. We have to react quickly to favourable weather and cannot normally guarantee skiable snow more than a day or two in advance. In good seasons we can get over 40 days skiing and enjoy some truly superb conditions. Depending on the snow pattern our first runs can be as early as November and our last, as late as mid April.

THE SKI RUNS
The erratic snowfall and rough moorland terrain make our ski runs rather different to ‘alpine pistes’.  Instead we ski on drifted snow between fences and follow shallow gullies where the grass has been cut shorter.  Snowsports are often only possible at Yad Moss because the soft surface and almost complete absence of rocks, permit skiing on very thin snow cover. We nevertheless have a modern piste grooming machine to make the most of the snow that does fall.  Please see our gallery All our ski runs are graded blue including some short steeper pitches. The skiing remains challenging however because of the uneven surface and the normally thin snow cover.

THE SKIING AREA AND SKI TOW
The skiing area at Yad Moss is located between the ticket office at 600m above sea level and the top pylon at 720m. It is served by a single fast ski tow which is reached after a 10 minute uphill walk from the roadside car parking.

Our auto-stacking Poma is 600m long and climbs 125m in vertical height. It moves up to 600 skiers and snowboarders per hour with a ride time of about 3 minutes. It provides access to runs of up to 800m in length.  Please see our piste map

Please do not buy a day or season (full or junior) membership if you are not competent in using a fast drag lift. You must be able to safely mount, dismount and exit the tow if it stops for any reason. Our operators reserve the right to withhold  your use of the tow  if you are presenting a hazard to yourself or others. Please see ‘A few rules.

SELF SUFFICIENCY
Please be aware that Yad Moss does not have any ski or snowboard hire and we do not provide lessons.  You will need to bring your own snowsports equipment and be competent in using it safely. You will also need to wear  suitable clothing to keep you warm and dry.  The sun does not always shine at Yad Moss !

CLUB ROOM
Located near the bottom of the tow our club room is on the first floor above the piste basher garage and is available to all season and day ticket members when the slope is open. It provides shelter, heating and access to our composting toilets. You will need to bring your own drinks and a packed lunch. We ask that you please take your litter home with you.

OPERATING TIMES
On ski days we aim to run the tow between 10:30am and 3:30pm.  Precise opening and closing times will however be a decision for the operators.  Please see the Snow report for our next anticipated ski day.
